So I've been playing this band a ton since seeing them play at Mercury Lounge in NYC a little over a week ago. Brother are keeping us all young, and doing it with a smile and a little bit of youth angst. Brother are exactly what music has needed for a while now, and they've made our city proud by doing this rooftop session.

Helvetica and the New York City Subway System
For years, the signs in the New York City subway system were a bewildering hodge-podge of lettering styles, sizes, shapes, materials, colors, and messages. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. This book tells the story of how typographic order triumphed over chaos.
The process didn’t go smoothly or quickly. At one point New York Times architecture writer Paul Goldberger declared that the signs were so confusing one almost wished that they weren’t there at all. Legend has it that Helvetica came in and vanquished the competition. Paul Shaw shows that it didn’t happen that way—that, in fact, for various reasons (expense, the limitations of the transit authority sign shop), the typeface overhaul of the 1960s began not with Helvetica but with its forebear, Standard (aka Akzidenz Grotesk). It wasn’t until the 1980s and 1990s that Helvetica became ubiquitous. Shaw describes the slow typographic changeover (supplementing his text with more than 250 images—photographs, sketches, type samples, and documents). He places this signage evolution in the context of the history of the New York City subway system, of 1960s transportation signage, of Unimark International, and of Helvetica itself.

Paul Shaw, an award-winning graphic designer, typographer, and calligrapher in New York City, teaches at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts. He is the coauthor of Blackletter: Type and National Identity and writes about letter design in the blog Blue Pencil.

I've been a little tied up, and traveling, etc. Though I am very happy to be back in NYC. Its getting cold here, but there's a beauty and romanticism to NYC in the Fall. It feels great to have this to call home.
Video Find: The Last Shadow Puppets in NYC
So we saw The Last Shadow Puppets last night and they were brilliant. Not only did they play their songs beautifully, but they also played The Beatles (below), David Bowie, and Leonard Cohen. It can't get better than that. Enjoy this video we shot (not the best signt, but the sound is brilliant) of I Want You (She's So Heavy) from October 30th, 2008 at The Gran Ballroom here in NYC.

NYC MTA Map Reimagined
The Haven Arts Gallery in the Bronx has adorned their walls with reimagined MTA subway maps. The exhibition, titled Men on Maps, ends on October 10th and presents "the unique aesthetic responses of over 40 male artists when presented with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s map of the New York Cities subway system as a base upon which to create." NYMag says that it's definitely the show for "those of us who have ever felt the urge to lean over and scrawl a knee-socks-and-bikini-clad woman" on Michael Hertz's original design. No word on whether or not the ladies will get a shot at the map.

This is the NY I remember when I visited here in the early 90s. I'm not saying I want everyone with a spraycan to write and piece everywhere, but I remember just being mesmerized by the colours of the paints and that someone was capable of that. Unfortunately, you don't see that much of this stuff these days, but I sure am glad when you do.
NYC Today: Lou Reed Wants His Own Street
UK rag the Daily Star is reporting that Lou Reed wants a New York City street to bear his name. Given the tabloid's track record, one pauses before rushing over to the East Village to gather signatures for a petition. On the other hand, considering Reed's notoriously expansive ego, you just know he grinds his teeth every time his Escalade rolls past Joey Ramone Place. The 66-year-old musician reportedly told the Star, "Lou Reed Way would be nice. Any little street would do." The modesty sounds a little unlike Lou, so we can't wait for the first local reporter to incur his wrath with a follow-up. But given his New York roots, if Lou wants a street, Lou should have a street!

NYC Today: Yankee Stadium
Our good friend Felipe drove up and grabbed some shots of the now vacant Yankee Stadium. I fancy these 2. The first is shot digital, the 2nd with a polaroid. I'm not a Yankee fan, though I take them over the Mets, but I still felt a bit a of sorry for every lifelong fan while looking through these shots. The polaroids really enhance the age and history of this area and what was in all aspects, the cultural of The Bronx. Felipe's photos are great. Check out the whole set here.
Ryan McGinness: Shows and Books
The NYC-based artist Ryan McGinness, known for his graphic-inspired art, is a super busy guy. He has every day scheduled until mid-2010.
Last week, McGinness opened a solo show in Milan, "A Shadow Feeling of Loss," at Paolo Curti & Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. and his first show in Toronto, "Aesthetic Comfort" at Artcore/Fabrice Marcolini, which includes his new work that will be shown in black light. Then parts of that show including the fluorescent seen in black light move to the Cincinnati Art Museum 25 October 2008 for an expanded-upon version of "Aesthetic Comfort."
Then towards the end of November, McGinness will have a show simultaneously shown in Hong Kong and Seoul, “No Sin/No Future” at CAIS Gallery.
You may not be able to get to any of these great shows, but you can get a piece of the action, as two Ryan McGinness books are being produced in conjunction with the shows. One is a limited edition soft cover artist book that goes with his Aesthetic Comfort exhibitions printed in fluorescent orange, yellow, pink, and green. The other is a collection of snapshots, sketches, notes, and scans that is a compendium to the No Sin/No Future at CAIS Galleries in Seoul and Hong Kong.
